Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Sept 12 deadline)
Call for Nominations: Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
(The application form is available on ResearchNet at www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca)
Time to start thinking about applying for Vanier scholarships that are due and need to be submitted by the student on Monday, Sept 12 (11:59 pm Vancouver time) to the Vanier website.
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program is designed to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and engineering, and health-related fields. Canadian and international students are eligible to be nominated for a Vanier Scholarship, which is valued at $50,000 per year for up to three years.
If you are going to apply, please let Sharon R. know by Sept 2 (earlier if possible so the grad program has sufficient time to write your nomination letter).
The deadline for graduate programs to submit nominations to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies is 4:00 pm (Vancouver time) on Tuesday, 27 September 2016.
ELIGIBILITY RULES- See www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/vanier-scholarship
TRANSCRIPTS- Sharon needs the official UBC transcripts, so you’ll need to order them; but wait until the beginning of Sept to order them, as it will have your Sept registration on it (thus you will not need to order them again if you are applying for another scholarship).
OTHER/FOREIGN TRANSCRIPTS- ask Sharon if she has them, if not, you are responsible for getting Sharon a set. NEW– For students including foreign transcripts, the institution must include a standard table or record that outlines the institution’s understanding of the foreign transcript.
For full details, please see www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/vanier-scholarship.
Remember – the Vanier CGS is competitive and if you do not have significant research completed and/or research papers, you should really think hard about whether you are competitive – it is better to wait an additional year to get a paper or two before you apply to have a better chance at being considered. Also, the program will have a quota, so student applications will be adjudicated at the graduate program level first.
Important Note regarding Student Mobility
Vanier scholars are encouraged to continuously broaden their research horizons and seek new challenges. For this reason, Vanier CGS candidates are strongly encouraged to pursue their studies at a university other than that (or those) which granted their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Candidates who are nominated by a university at which they have completed a previous degree must provide a strong and compelling rationale, in the Special Circumstances section of the application, as to why they have chosen to undertake their PhD at the same university.
Though the majority of UBC’s Vanier nominees will have a previous affiliation with UBC, we strongly encourage faculty members to identify and consider prospective students from universities beyond UBC.
If you have any questions, please direct them to Sharon R. (sharonr@bcgsc.ca).
